I've been back for just over a week.
(It feels so much longer than that.)
The trip itself was good. If I had to sum it up in one word, I would say "hot".
Mostly because it was constantly in the 90s and the only way to escape the heat was to take a few showers each day.
But there was so much more to the DR than just the heat. The landscape, the people, the food, the way God is moving in His church there...it all adds to the beauty that is the Dominican Republic.
I don't necessarily feel the need to unpack this trip the way I did with Africa. It was a different experience, being on the leadership side, mentoring students who were experiencing a third-world country for the first time.

so, i heard once that traveling abroad teaches you more about your own culture than the culture you visit. that said, what do you think your time in the DR has shown you about life back home? love you and happy to catch a glimpse of your trip!
ReplyDeleteOh Lacy Blaine, leave it to you to ask the good and hard questions. For starters, I learned a lot about what being a leader means...the way that leading requires you to step back and provide opportunities for students to take ownership. And once again, I learned that even when you don't speak the language (very well), you can still form bonds that prove to be huge blessings. And finally, I learned that even a mother of 5 who has never had a stove can bless me more than I could ever bless her.
